Basic Tips
On Improving Your Security
Since the dawn of time, society has had to cope with theft.
It is a fact of life, that we have amongst us, those you think its their god given right to help themselves to other peoples property.
To secure your property and keep it safe from the thief, you have to think like a thief. If you look at your property and think, “I could nick this and no one would know.” Then you must realise a thief can have the same thought.
Ten Tips on helping to keep your property safe.
(1) Never leave doors or windows insecure. In the
summer, when you are in the back garden, keep the front windows and doors locked. Don’t nip to the corner shop leaving windows and doors insecure, a thief can be in and out of your house in less time then it takes to read this sentence.
Fit security lights and lights in the home with timers.

(2) Never leave wallets, purses, keys or other valuables on show. This includes the house as well as the car. What a thief can’t see, he won’t know you have.
(3) Don’t leave house or car keys on a hook in the kitchen or on a hall table. With more and more vehicles now having immobilisers the hooks in the kitchen and the dish on the hall table are the first place a thief will look for your keys.
(4) Don’t leave handbags purses or wallets downstairs when you go to bed, take them upstairs with you.

(5) Don’t leave tools around the garden. Lock them away in the garage or shed. Why arm the thief with the tools he or she needs to break into your own home.
(6) Ipods, Walkmans and mobile phones are great gadgets. However at night they light up like Christmas trees and signal to the thief what a valuable piece of loot you have. Keep them hidden in your pocket so they can’t be seen. Register your phone so it can be blocked if it’s stolen. Take care when using earphones, if you can’t hear what is behind you, then how can you, expect to protect yourself.
(7) Wear your handbag strap across the chest rather then just over
the shoulder. Keep it closed and use a purse chain to attach your purse to the bag. This will stop the Dipper thief lifting your purse out of your bag. Men should keep their wallets in a buttoned or zipped pocket if possible. That lovely bulge sticking out from the rear pocket of your jeans, signals to the thief that you have a nice wad of cash and cards just waiting to be nicked.

(8) At night walk with a friend or group, stay in the light and avoid those dark shortcuts home. Better to take a few minutes longer then end up a victim of a mugger or rapist. Use black cabs or booked taxis. Note the registration number of the cab discreetly in your phone.
(9) In the nightclub or the pub always keep your drink in sight. Wait until you need to refresh your drink before going to the toilets. This will avoid leaving your drink or trusting someone else to look after it. Tell someone you are with, where you are going next or when you decide to go home.
(10) Never leave your car unlocked, even when you go to pay for your petrol. Never leave the keys in the car or leave the car running unattended on the drive whilst it defrosts in the winter, or if you have to nip in the house to fetch something that you have forgotten.
We can never keep our property 100% safe, but using commonsense and taking on board a few of the tips above, it will help a little in keeping your property safe and also help to avoid your insurance premium going up every year.
Think secure, be safe.
